Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality has finished the project of 1939: A Journey to the Walls of Diyarbakır, supported by Karacadağ Development Agency. Within this project, two Tourism Information Centers have been opened and two buses for citysighting have been purchased. Project will contribute to the promotion of the historical City Walls of Diyarbakır.
At opening ceremony of the Tourism Information Center at Mardinkapı, Osman Baydemir, the Mayor of Diyarbakir, said that "first of all, we need a roadmap which will determine our next 30 years. Cultural heritage of Diyarbakır and its universal values are needed to be promoted all over the world".
Baydemir: “Diyarbakır’s future is bright now"
In his speech, Baydemir said "Diyarbakır’s future is brighter now. All adversity and problems are over. Our next goal is only to follow the mutual roadmap, with a joint effort. The opening of the tourist offices is one of the tiny steps of this mutual perspective. Cost is small, yet very important in terms of contribution. "I do not like to talk about the past. we know what to do Today, and we know what we will do tomorrow. 5 years later, we will know what to do. We know where we're going and where we want to reach. The rest is to cooperate. I thank to Development Agency for its co-operation".
Karakoyun: Diyarbakır has tourism potential, yet there is much work to be done to get the desired point.
Secretary General of Karacadağ DA Dr. İlhan Karakoyun said; “Development Agencies are known for their financial supports programmes, however they are actually very important elements of the process of decentralization in Turkey. DAs need to take a greater role in regions; one of the main tasks of the Agencies is to identify the potential of the region and to support the projects for the development of region". Karakoyun added: “we are carrying out a participatory process in line with the other actors and institution of the region, trying to get their opinions and suggestions to achieve this goal. Diyarbakır has important tourism potentials, but there is much work to be done to reach the desired point". Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality Culture and Tourism Department head Muharrem Cebe said that, "the aim of the project is to facilitate access to historical and touristic structures of inner castle (Suriçi) for foreign and domestic tourists. Dağkapı Tourist Information Office is complete and ready for opening and informational kiosks have been put in various parts of the city".
